North-East is a Region with huge resources and rich culture but unfortunately there is also a problem galore, with North East- lack of human resources, lack of professional institutions, lack of trained man power, illiteracy, poverty, unemployment, …well, the list is endless. North East is having huge deficiencies in number of health delivery systems and the same holds true for Eye Care. Eye care in the Region is a major concern. Rapid Survey 2001 reveals a glaring disparity in preview of Blindness Rate:

BASIC DATA OF NORTH EASTERN REGION:

Blindness Rate:
All India Average 1.1%
North Eastern Region 2.5%

The main problem that we are facing for these values being so high in the Region is the Lack of Trained Man Power vis-à-vis the Human Resource Challenge. This is the major overarching issue that is preventing the figures from improving, with an ever increasing population the ratio for trained ophthalmologists, MLOPs (Mid Level Ophthalmic Personnel) to people is abysmal. There is an acute shortage of both Ophthalmologists as well as MLOPs.

HR CATEGORY  TOTAL NEED CURRENT AVAILABILITY HR DEFICIT
Ophthalmologists 22,960 14,000 8,960
Optometrists 22,960 1,979 20,981
Eye Care Managers 1,722 0 1,722
Hospital Based Ophthalmic Assistants 103,320 35,000 68,320

The above statistics indicate the acute challenge the country is facing as far as Human Resource is concerned. The need to overcome this gap is great and all efforts towards meeting this end are to be emphasized if we are to improve the blindness rate and reduce the disability caused by visual impairment in the Region.

To meet the underlying needs of shortage in manpower Bansara Institute of Ophthalmic Sciences has had the experience of starting the First ever 4 years of BSc Optometry Course in collaboration with Martin Luther Christian University. Two batches have already qualified and are well placed. In the past year we have also started the MSc and PHD courses in Optometry.

We are conducting the course in collaboration with Martin Luther Christian University Shillong and have had great results in such a short period of time.
